The Chollas Creek Earthlab

The entrance to the Earthlab

In partnership with San Diego City Schools, Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek manages a 4 acre open space parcel adjacent to Millenial Technology School (formerly Gompers Secondary School). The development and management of environmental science instruction at this site is an ideal, and critical, component of the vision both for Chollas Creek , and for science and technology instruction for students. Not only will creek-feeding wetlands be restored and monitored within this campus property. It will serve as a hub for information sharing with nearby schools, neighborhoods and civic groups through students' community service.

Most importantly, the Earthlab's greatest merit lies in its potential for creating knowledgeable, caring stewards of our environment who will work and live responsibly to avoid the impacts that have made remedial measures in Chollas Creek and elsewhere so necessary. Environmental education curricula will cultivate stewardship in students. And as wetlands-protection emissaries, students will carry this legacy into the community.

Working under a generous Environmental Champions Award from Sempra Energy, Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek is coordinating a Master Concept Plan for the Earthlab. This Master Plan will serve as a guiding document for fundraising and grant-writing in support of this state-of-the-art outdoor learning center.
