First Annual “Cycle Southcrest”

A Family Event Introducing The Chollas Creek to Bayshore Bikeway Trail Project

Last June 7, “Cycle Southcrest” engaged more than 300 students, along with their families, in an outdoor bike event and health fair. A bicycle rodeo, food booths, music, and over thirty healthy living exhibitors were there to participate. Sponsored by WalMart, with help from other donors, over 50 bicyxcles were donated to area children. The event was also attended by a host of elected officials, including Supervisor Greg Cox, Councilmember Marti Emerald. Councilmember Jack Dale, San Diego School Board Trustee Marne Foster, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez. Former freestyle BMX rider and founder of HARO Bikes Bob Haro was on hand to welcome families to the event.

The First Annual “Cycle Southcrest”was a collaborative effort to introduce the Southcrest and Shelltown neighborhoods and schools to The Chollas Creek to Bayshore Bikeway Trail Project. This project is being led by non-profit organization Groundwork San Diego, in partnership with the City of San Diego Planning Department. Funded by a $541,000 grant from the County of San Diego and SANDAG’s Active Transportation Grant program, the project is enabling Groundwork to design a bicycle/pedestrian trail to connect Southcrest Trails to the Bayshore Bikeway and 32nd St. trolley station. It will give residents access to one of the region’s most exciting assets, San Diego Bay.
